Tech learning center operates at Sibley Building
Connecting people and technology is what Boundless Connections does in downtown Rochester. Located at the Sibley building, the hands-on center provides individualized technology guidance and ushers its students into technology careers.
Nationally, according to Boundless Connections, there are more than 1.5 million open IT jobs in America and only 55,000 students graduate with a technology degree each year.
There are no formal classes at Boundless Connections. The tech center focuses on providing individualized instruction. There are several different set-ups to make people comfortable — a conference table, a series of couches and chairs, some desks, a band set-up, and 3D printers.
“In order to find and develop more tech talent, we need to cast a wide net,” says Christina Lopez, CEO of Boundless Connections. “Our tech centers provide access to state-of-the-art technology and are open to all ages, all abilities, and all interests.”
Lopez started the business because she didn’t have this type of support when she was growing up.
“You’ll see that we can tutor people in our tech center who are taking online courses or in-person classes,” Lopez says. “We can also assist people in finding the right class or curriculum for their goals. For example, if you want to learn robotics or coding, the team can connect you with the tools and talent of someone who can show you how to do this.”
Boundless Connections is working to instill confidence in its students, encouraging them to pursue more ambitious goals. Some program participants have already secured their dream jobs. Others have started their own businesses.
“People need this,” Lopez says. “Word of mouth is the best way to spread the word. People need to come in and experience the center themselves.”
Anyone who wants to check out the center can do so with a day pass for $15. Monthly membership fees are $150. There is also a comprehensive three-month program that costs $1,500 monthly. This program includes 15 hours of training a week and five hours of the time is spent directly with mentors.
Tech Unleashed, aimed at younger students, provides a program designed for 13-17 year-olds. Scholarships are available.
The original Boundless Connections location is still going strong in Olean. In fact, that center opened in 2017 and doubled its space within the first year. Rochester is the second center.
Lopez hopes to be in five more cities in five years.
